Hello, my name is Tanner Owens and I am a 2020 graduate of Iowa State University. I majored in journalism & mass communication with a minor in history. During my time at Iowa State I served as a staff writer and summer editor at the Iowa State Daily – the university’s college newspaper. Writing primarily for the paper’s arts & entertainment section, I contributed over 60 digital stories and 15 print stories.
While gaining valuable writing, interviewing, and editing experience at the Daily, I secured a professional internship with Allrecipes Magazine as part of the Meredith Apprenticeship Program in 2019. I worked closely with multiple editors to learn the ropes of writing for print magazines and ended my internship with five published pieces – primarily in the BOB “Last Call” section.
As a result of my high output and clean writing style, I was also fortunate to be chosen for the 2021 American Society of Magazine Editors summer internship. Being selected for this highly competitive internship was a great honor, but I was unable to complete the internship due to COVID-related financial issues and the cost of living in New York City for a summer.
I now live in Salt Lake City, Utah and have worked for a fine foods specialty market for nearly three years. Here I have learned about what consumers demand, the history of artisan products, and how to handle tight deadlines and high-pressure situations. I have also kept up on my writing with marketing-focused contributions to the Caputo’s blog.
I am currently looking to move into a journalism or copywriting position to begin moving my career forward. Please take a look at my past work, and if you like what you read please feel free to reach out!
Thank you!
